Does My Small Business Really Need Video?

You've got photos and a decent website. Do you really need video as well? The honest answer from a local film company.

You've got good photos. Your website does its job. Your Google listing is ticking along. So when someone tells you your business needs video as well, a bit of scepticism is fair enough.

We make films for a living, so you'd expect us to say yes, obviously, everyone needs video. But we'd rather give you the same honest answer we give about websites: probably, but not for the reason you think.

It's not about keeping up or looking modern. It's about what happens in a customer's head before they ever contact you.

You Might Not Need It Yet

Let's start with who shouldn't buy a video this month. If your website is out of date, your Google Business Profile is unclaimed, or your photos don't show your best work, fix those first. They're the foundations, and video amplifies what's already there. A lovely film pointing people at a broken website is money spent in the wrong order.

If the basics are sorted, though, keep reading, because this is where video starts earning its place. Here's what it actually does for a small business.

Trust Before the First Call

For a small business, most buying decisions come down to one question: do I trust these people? Words on a page build that slowly. A real person, talking naturally about their work, builds it in under a minute.

When someone has watched you speak, you're not a stranger by the time they ring. Half the awkwardness of that first contact is already gone. For local businesses especially, where people are choosing someone to let into their home or trust with their livelihood, that head start matters.

Some Things Photos Can't Explain

Photos are brilliant at showing finished things. They're poor at showing how anything works, feels or sounds. The atmosphere of your venue. The care in your process. The way you talk a customer through a decision. If what makes you good is something that happens, rather than something that sits still, only video can really show it.

This is also where video saves you time. A short film answering the question every customer asks means you're not explaining the same thing on every call.

Being Remembered

Here's the quieter benefit. People forget paragraphs and scroll past photos, but a face and a voice stick. Weeks later, when they finally need what you do, the person they watched talking comes to mind before a name on a list ever does. You're not just informing people. You're becoming the one they remember, and in a crowded market that's worth more than any clever slogan.

One Good Film Beats Ten Forgettable Clips

Here's the good news: needing video doesn't mean needing lots of it. You don't need a posting schedule or a channel. One well-made film about who you are and how you work can sit on your homepage, live on your Google listing, go out in emails and be cut down for social media. It quietly does its job for years.

That's the thinking behind our film and video services: one honest film, made properly and used everywhere, rather than a pile of content nobody watches.

Start Small and See What Happens

So, does your business need video? If the foundations are in place, our honest answer is yes, and one film is enough to prove it either way. Start with a single short video, put it where your customers already look, and watch what changes. Warmer enquiries, people staying longer on your site, someone saying "I feel like I know you already" on the first call. That last one happens more often than you'd think.

If you're weighing it up and want a straight answer for your particular business, drop us a message. We're a film company in Hertfordshire and we're happy to tell you honestly whether video makes sense for you yet. Sometimes the answer really is "not yet", and if so, we'll say exactly that.
